Tales of the Perilously Grounded
It's Only Funny To Us
The Funny
One part comedy cabaret. One part celebration. Annual awesomeness. Raw Sugar presents The Funny, a cavalcade of adventurous imaginative new work. The Funny features standup, dance, music, puppetry and comedy from some f**cking funny people.

Highlights from 2017:

Highlights from 2016:
Hosted by your Aunt Flo (yes, that Aunt Flo), we straddled the great Mississippi River with one weekend of performances at the Bryant Lake Bowl and one weekend at Bedlam Lowertown to show off performances including Worth It by Jenny Moeller & Rebekah Rentzel, Bunny Ranch Menu by Amy Ollila and Danielle Krivinchuk, Yoga of the Patriarchy by Michelle Casali, An Evening with Maude by Andrea Fairbanks, Dreams & Trash by Molly Budke, dance and spoken word by Akiko Ostlund, Dr. Stranger-love (or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Patriarchy) by Sarah Parker, Cunt Camp by Anna Johnson & Lucy Roberts, A Guide to Rest & Relaxation by Rachel Petrie, Can I Touch It by Ifrah Mansour, The First Two Rows May Get Wet by Tender Vittles, Excerpts from my Newest Romance Novel by Shannon Mae Leach, and Pizza Party (with Patricia Lake) by Paige Collette.
Highlights of 2015:
In ever-rotating wardrobes, hosts Rebekah and Jenny hand the reigns of the stage to stand-up comedy by Molly Budke, Rana May, and Madelyne Riley; story-telling by Anna Sutheim, Shannon Mae Leach, both original belly-dance fusion and an audience participation sex quiz sketch (featuring Sarah Parker and Farrington Starnes) by Akiko Ostlund; dinosaur burlesque by Andi Cheney; a musical comedy duo by Rachel Petrie featuring Ben Desbois; The Little Mermaid retold with trash instead of treasure by Hattie Hsu; comedy burlesque by Paige Collette; and an excerpt from a new dark comedy by Sarah Parker. The show finaled with a high speed ensemble distillation of the classic film A League of Their Own, called “monumentally clever and daring” by critics. Each of the six nights of performances also highlighted guest performances by Ifrah Mansour, ShaVunda Horsley, Courtney MacLean, Carly Wicks, Maggie Ferris, and Shannon Forney. Additionally, performances featured a festival atmosphere created by pre-show happy hours and post-show dance parties with partners including Planned Parenthood, KFAI, and Puszi Party.

Highlights of 2014:
When the Pastryarchy (a Men’s Rights Activist cupcake) steals Raw Sugar’s sugar, their pursuit brings them all around Bedlam Lowertown’s flexible space, from the cavernous wage gap to the Cosmic Vulva. Between these slapstick vignettes (also featuring Chris Stroschein and Shannon Mae Leach), performers Molly Budke, Rachel Petrie, Gabriela Santiago, Paige Collette, Quinn Rivenburgh, and Andi Cheney (featuring Alana Horton) delight the audience with feisty standup comedy, bawdy burlesque, animated music videos, and a survivor’s sardonic celebration of rape.
Eurydice: A Performance Game
Raw Sugar playtested a new performance game by Molly Budke,
at Savage Umbrella's SPACE on Sunday, January 22nd, 2017.

Eurydice pits Team Persephone against Team Orpheus in this interactive re-telling of the classic Greek myth, where only Eurydice may choose where she goes. It is your job to ave her by getting her to stay on your side of the playing space - in the World or in the Underworld. Eurydice is drawn to song and kindness, she shies away from harsh lights and anger. Sway her to your side and you may save her.

RED: A Staged Reading
Raw Sugar presented a staged reading of RED by Molly Budke,
directed by Andi Cheney on Saturday, October 8th, 2016.

RED is an ambitious, dark, funny, and too real fairy tale, more akin to Grimm than Disney. It requires actors to venture into the wolf's skin, and maybe get a little aroused by it. Content warning for sexual assault/rape. Content warning for gratuitous violence. Content warning for gendered violence. Content warning for gender essentialism and sexism. Content warning for animate trees.

Featuring: Gabby Santiago as Sylvie, Shannon Forney as Robin, Scott Taulman as Rex, Adam Vachon as Andrew, SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE as Jack, and Stage Manager Karla Leitzman, with scenic elements created by Allison Osberg and puppeted by Jenny Moeller & Rebekah Rentzel.

Sex: A Creative Conversation

A bimonthly event featuring original performances and frank discussion about human sexuality. We believe that no matter your history, identity, desire or community, we are more alike than we are different. In our differences we have things to teach each other. We create a space to freely share our sexual truths, to make make the private public, and to find solidarity in our common experiences. In an effort to maintain a safe space for the performers, Raw Sugar reserves the right to refuse admittance or ask anyone to leave.
